Very special home wanted for JW — full loan with a view to permanent rehoming
Due to a genuine lack of time, I am looking for an experienced, long-term home for my much-loved ex-racehorse, JW.
JW’s registered racing name is Jacks Wish. He is a 6 and 16.2 Thoroughbred gelding, born on 15 May 2020 and currently based near Preston, Lancashire. He was homebred by my uncle and is incredibly special to our family, so finding the right person is far more important than finding somebody quickly.
He is by Jack Hobbs, out of Camillas Wish. His dam had a successful National Hunt career, winning five races under rules - two over hurdles and three over fences, as well as a point-to-point.
JW is a lightly raced ex-National Hunt horse. He was trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and had only three starts:
• 6th of 13 in a National Hunt Flat race at Huntingdon
• 5th of 11 in a National Hunt Flat race at Bangor-on-Dee
• One run over hurdles at Market Rasen
He never raced in a chase or over steeplechase fences.
JW raced in our family’s Proos racing colours, the same colours also carried by Broadway Boy, our much-loved six-time winner and Grand National runner who gave our family some unforgettable days in racing.
As JW has raced under rules, he is eligible for RoR registration and classes, subject to the new keeper completing the necessary registration and membership requirements.
JW has spent time at the British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre and has since been carefully and patiently retrained. He is now lovely on the long reins and is sensible enough for my experienced 13-year-old daughter, Summer, to ride. I have recent videos of both Summer and an experienced adult rider, Lauren, riding him, which I am happy to share with genuine enquiries.
He has three lovely, expressive paces. His schooling is still fairly basic because I simply haven’t had the time to develop it, but we genuinely believe he has the movement and potential to excel in dressage with the right experienced person.
Summer has occasionally popped him over a fence and he has been perfectly happy to do so, but he has not been extensively schooled or produced as a jumping horse.
JW hacks very well in company with another sensible horse, but he does not currently hack alone. He needs a confident, experienced adult who understands Thoroughbreds and will continue building his confidence. He is not suitable for a novice.
A Chifney is recommended when loading, and he should be loaded by an experienced handler who understands how to use one correctly.
Medical and behavioural history
Before receiving treatment, JW could nap and become upset under saddle. He was subsequently diagnosed with kissing spines and underwent successful surgery in April 2025 at Hirds
He has since completed a careful rehabilitation programme, is comfortable through his back and moves freely. His SI is assessed and normally injected approximately once each year. This must be continued whenever clinically recommended.
More recently, JW sustained a tendon-sheath injury. This has been treated and he is now back hacking as part of a gradual return to work. His new home must be prepared to continue building his strength and fitness steadily, following physio advice and without rushing him.
His complete veterinary history will be disclosed and discussed openly with genuinely interested people. Nothing will be hidden because I want the arrangement to be safe and right for JW and his new home.
He would suit somebody wanting to enjoy hacking in company, careful schooling and developing a genuine partnership with a lovely, sensitive Thoroughbred. Any future workload, jumping or competition plans must be guided by his progress and veterinary advice. He is not being advertised as a ready-made competition horse. Although he has the potential with the right rider.
The right home must:
• Be experienced with Thoroughbreds and horses returning to work
• Be happy to hack him in company rather than alone
• Continue his rehabilitation carefully
• Provide suitable turnout and equine companionship
JW is a lovely horse who deserves somebody with the time and experience to enjoy and develop him properly. With three children and my daughter’s busy competition schedule, I simply cannot give him the consistency he deserves.
